California
Despite a population of nearly 40 million residents, California is still a long way from legalizing online poker. A lack of agreement between tribal casinos and commercial gambling companies has prevented the state from moving forward. However, online poker remains a potential revenue source for the state. Several bills have been proposed since the late 2000s.
While some of these bills have stalled, others have passed. In 2015, California lawmakers introduced multiple online poker bills. However, the bills did not gain enough support to pass. It is unclear whether California will ever get the bill it needs to legalize online poker for real money.
New York
Despite the fact that the state is home to the fourth largest population in the country, New York has not yet fully legalized online poker. However, a new push is gaining momentum.
A bill titled Bill S6913 was introduced by state senator John Bonacic, which would regulate online poker in New York. The bill would also explicitly recognize poker as a game of skill, which could prove to be important for the future of online gambling in the state.
However, the bill has yet to be approved by the Senate Committee on Racing and Wagering. Despite its merits, there are a few issues that are slowing down the legalization of online poker in New York.
Connecticut
Despite the legality of online poker in Connecticut, no operators have launched a site in the state. The two licensed online casinos have not expressed interest in online poker. However, there are a number of offshore poker sites that accept Connecticut residents.
Online poker players must be over the age of 21 to play in the state. Connecticut law allows for a maximum of two online poker sites. However, the law does not provide for an interstate poker compact. This allows for poker sites to share tables across state lines, which would create a more viable market for poker players in the state.
